Methodist Church leaders apologized to Cheyenne and Arapaho
tribes for the
slaughter in 1864 of about 200 Indians (Native Americans) in a
massacre led
by a lay preacher.
"The tribes said they would ask the nation's second largest
Protestant
denomination to assist in lobbying Congress for cash reparations
to victims'
descendants."
"The church's General Conference passed the "Sand Creek
Apology" with little
opposition last week, 132 years after Col. John M. Chivington led
his cavalry
unit into the Colorado encampment to kill the Indians (Native
Americans)
there."
